A Dynamic Model of Ballasted Rail Track with Bituminous Sub-Ballast Layer

AbstractThe bituminous sub-ballast layer within the ballasted rail track allows some mechanical and environmental advantages. An analytical model of a ballasted rail track with sub-ballast layer has been proposed by considering the rail as viscous-elastic continuous beam discretely supported, at four levels of elasticity.The model was used to compare the mechanical performance of both ballasted track with and without bituminous sub-ballast layer. The results confirmed that the bituminous sub-ballast layer reduces the dynamic forces on the ground and achieves the technical objectives as reduction of ground borne vibrations and increase of the design life of the rail track.

Adjustable prestressing for construction stages of incrementally launched bridges

Incrementally launched bridges, which are generally built with the static scheme of a continuous beam on supports, change their scheme several times during launching. In these different configurations, internal forces vary and bending moments of opposite signs occur in the same sections for different positions of deck during advancement. In these bridges, two different kinds of prestressing are necessary: a temporary one during launching and a definitive one in service life. Simplified Formulation of Solution for Beams on Winkler Foundation allowing Discontinuities due to Loads and Constraints

The paper discusses material for a course in Structural Mechanics addressed to second-Year Civil Engineering students. The response of beams on a Winkler foundation characterized by discontinuities in both the displacements (deflections and/or slopes) and forces (internal forces and/or loads) is studied. In particular, a simplified formulation for the solution of the discontinuous differential equation governing this problem is given. In some cases, the formulation is able to give the exact solution in a closed form. Buckling of Elastic Beam Under Unilateral Constraint

ABSTRACT A criterion is proposed to calculate the critical load of a continuous beam under unilateral constraint. The beam is assumed to be built in at the ends and to rest on equally spaced elastic supports, that have equal stiffness. The problem is solved by determining the length of the half-wave of the buckled shape, the number of supports involved, and their position with respect to the end of the half-wave. The analysis model thus defined is determined in relation to the geometry of the beam and to the ratio between the stiffness of the supports and the shearing stiffness of the generic span.
